The Myth of ABB Drives: Helping Enterprises Reduce Energy Consumption
Release date : 2014-11-22 9:53:41, Author : kate semi Technology Co., Ltd
In 2008 alone, the installed ABB low-voltage frequency converters saved a total of about 170 billion kWh of electricity, enough to meet the electricity needs of the EU's 42 million households throughout the year. In addition, they also reduce about 140 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to the total annual emissions of 35 million vehicles.
ABB is the world's leading supplier of AC and DC low-voltage inverters and high-power medium-voltage inverters. It can provide a wide range of inverters with power ranges from 100 watts to 100 megawatts.
From single-phase inverters for home and commercial appliances, to large fully electrified drivetrains that drive the entire natural gas liquefaction plant, to giant gearless mill drives – these giant mills are used in a variety of mines and mineral processing plants. Ore and minerals are ground to smaller particles... In most industries and applications, ABB drives can be used to increase energy efficiency.
In fact, frequency converters are an integral part of ABB's broader range of power and automation products, systems and solutions. These products, systems, and solutions can help energy-intensive industries such as cement, metallurgy, mining, oil and gas, power generation, and pulp and paper industries use electricity more efficiently and increase productivity.
ABB inverters have achieved very significant results in terms of energy savings, productivity improvements and improved process control. E.g:
ABB provided four low-voltage AC drives for the UK's employers’ bank, allowing the pumps of the air-conditioning system to operate at much lower speeds than before, saving customers 90% of energy. By reducing energy consumption, customers can save about $110,000 in funds each year, and they can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 500 tons per year.
In the process of upgrading mine hoists in a Polish mine belonging to KGHM, ABB provided two DC inverters. The mine hoist runs between the mining operation area and the ground with a length of 1,053 meters. The two systems shorten the running time of the hoist from downhole to the ground. This transformation increased the production capacity of the copper mine by 15% and successfully extended KGHM's service life of those motors that have been used for 30 years.
ABB's medium-voltage inverters help the sucrose plants in Central America not only achieve electricity self-sufficiency, but also earn up to US$1 million in revenue each year by selling excess power to the local grid.
